Santa

So this kid’s parents told him that there is no Santa Clause. So he comes to school and tells the other first graders in his class that Santa is not real. Lots of kids get upset. We talk to the kid and tell him to just keep his thoughts in his head because it is making other kids upset. After a call to the parents asking them to talk to their kid about not upsetting other kids about telling them there is no santa we find out that they told him that because they don’t have money to buy him presents, so if there is no santa he won’t expect presents and the parents are off the hook.
Any thoughts?

That’s kind of a sad story, but I don’t blame the parents. What else could they do?

There are other options, there is the dollar store, i have heard of people taking kids old toys that they haven’t played with in a long time and wrapping those up and the kids are exctited about them again, there are a lot of programs out there for people in the low income bracket. I think those parents just didn’t want to take the time to try to do something for their kid and just took the easy way out.

Just tell the kids on Christmas morning when they don’t have any presents in the sock, that they were probably naughty all year. That way it’s their fault, they still believe in Santa, and you don’t have to spend money on presents. Every one wins except maybe the kid’s self-esteem, but then he’ll be extra good next year. You win again!

Some parents also have a sense of pride. Some people have too much pride to accept “charity”. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. We grew up not having a lot. And when we don’t have money, we don’t expect presents from our parents. That’s life – it’s ugly sometimes.
