Having the Wind Knocked Out of You

The Snipers lost 4-7, so now we’re 2-1 so far. One of those 7 points was off of my skate. Hate it when that happens, but it’s not uncommon for that to happen to a defenseman.

I got the wind knocked out of me. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve had that happen. Even with playing full-checking with the cousins, we always seemed to check “nicely,” and I never got smashed so bad I couldn’t breathe (bruises are another thing, entirely).

So me and this other guy are charging toward a loose puck and we’re both trying to poke it away like the amateur C league players we are. I don’t even remember who got to the puck but a split second before it happened I knew this one was going to hurt. We were both going pretty much full speed and this guy weighs a good 50 lbs more than I do, so I bounced off him like a ping pong ball off a brick wall. Sad thing is he didn’t even fall. I think he staggered a little bit, so that’s good.

I left my feet, landed, and slid for a while. When I tried to inhale it hurt, and got up to my feet pretty quick and skated over for a sub, all the while feeling an interesting burning sensation in my chest trying to breathe.

At least I drew a penalty.
