Update: I posted a video of Caleb signing and talking on timches.com.
Everyone knows that Caleb is the cutest kid in the world…but did you know he’s also the smartest (my slightly biased opinion)? Caleb is now 15 months, and in the last month or so, it seems like he’s learned a lot of signs. Teaching your baby Sign Language seems to be the thing to do nowadays, but being married to a Sign Language interpreter, Caleb really had no choice: he was going to learn ASL whether he wanted to or not. Caleb knowing ASL is great for all of us. Just look at this comparison:

His signing vocabulary is not only larger, but also more useful. Caleb can understand us, and it’s really nice to be able to understand him before he can speak. If Caleb’s whinning about something, just ask him what’s wrong, and he’ll point in the general direction, sign “Eat” then “Banana.” He knows he can’t say “Banana” so that we can understand it (though he tries), and knows that he gets his point across quicker with the sign.
(Of course, he knows a lot more verbal things such as a bunch of sounds that animals make, but that wouldn’t have helped my point)

Dude, that’s so cool. I wanna see him sign.
Did you see the baby in “Meet the Fockers”?

Yeah, we saw that last week. It was pretty cool because Caleb knows most of what Little Jack knew (was that his name?). We should teach Caleb the sign for “poop.”
