Don’t get me wrong, I’m really excited about going to the Philippines in a couple weeks for a big family reunion, but man, I really wish I was around for this CSS Off that’s happening June 1st. It’s a contest!
Convert a .psd into HTML making use of web standards, in twelve hours or less. Think SimpleQuiz, except it’s the final exam.
I’m not so delusional that I think I have a good chance of winning, but I do like this kind of a challenge. Considering that the description above is literally what I do at my current position at FileMaker, I should be “good” at it, right?
One of the things that I like about these kinds of contests is looking at the submissions when they are done. When I was in school we would have similar assignments. Everyone was given the same assests, and were let loose on what we could do with those elements, creatively. The critiques at the end of the assignment were some of the most memorable–and best learning experiences–that I can remember from all my (4 and a half) years of college. The end results were so varied and so creative.
Come to think of it, the last contest I entered in online was that skinning contest for Pocomail and came away with a free iPod. Phil invited me to work with him on last year’s RailsDay, but I was too busy at the time. I kind of regret not participating.
I’ll be watching this first contest closely, and hopefully the next one will be soon.

Man, Tim, I hope you have a good time in the Philippines! Are you going to Davao? If so, take some pictures for me; we’re headed over there next year!
Thanks!

Tim,
Sorry you won’t be able to participate, but it’s good to hear that you would want to if you could. Maybe you could contribute in the future – we’ll hopefully have more contests besides the one on June 1st.
Enjoy the Philippines!

@John: Good to hear from you John! We’re not going to make it to Davao this time. My parents now live in Manila, so we’ll be vacationing around Luzon. Glad to hear you’re finally going back–I remember that you longed to visit when we were in high school.
@Tony: Wow, the CSS guy himself! CSS Off is a great idea. If I feel like waking up at 2am Philippines time on June 1st (or if I’m still jet lagged), I’ll check out the .psd file. Maybe I’ll still submit a quick entry…
